A child's labour is a childhood lost
|
(Madan Kokte | Salpi village, District Akola) |
Child labour is economically unsound, psychologically disastrous and unsustainable for the future. 16 year old Madan Kokte was one such child trapped in the clutches of child labour. His family of seven, depended on his father and a meagre piece of non-irrigated land to make ends meet. Inadequate income drove Arun Kokte, Madan's father, to put his child to work in the fields with him. |
|
According to UNICEF, India has the largest number of working children and a majority of them hail from rural areas. |

Arvind BCI Project at Akola was conducting a special children camp in various villages to make people aware about importance of education & health hazards of working in field. It was during one of such camps at village Sarkinhi that Arvind's representative came to know about Madan Kokte. Our representative immediately went to meet Madan and his family. Arun Kokte opened up to Ganesh Nandapure and explained his misery. Since he was a very small farmer he never received any government benefit and didn't have access to any government schemes. |
Our team took up Arun's case and met local government officials. Arvind's team also facilitated access to few government schemes which were applicable to small farmers like Arun. They were delighted with the efforts of Arvind and sent Madan back to school with a promise that he'll never work the field till he chooses to do so as an adult. Madan is now in class 10 at the Rajgeet Vidhyalay in Mahan village. |
